Following a highly anticipated midterm election in November 2022, a new Congress, one that is more divided and polarized, is now in place. Despite early predictions of major party turnover, the American public voted to elect a Republican House and a Democratic Senate, both with narrow margins of majority.
Without an overwhelming majority in either chamber, policymakers on both sides of the aisle are set to face conflict when it comes to addressing policy issues and passing legislation. Indeed, less than a third of policymakers expect the outlook for bipartisanship to improve, with only 7 percent of policymakers indicating they believe this kind of collaboration will be much stronger.
Where do policymakers agree? The importance of the economy as a top policy priority. Amidst concerns about inflation, as well as the risk of recession, policymakers on both sides of the aisle told us the economy is their top priority.
