The policymakers we spoke with in Texas reveal public health to be a top priority. High costs of healthcare and mental health are the leading challenges, but policy leaders also identify providing care to underserved communities and lack of insurance coverage as important issues. Texas has some of the highest uninsured rates in the country, with about 18.1 percent of the population lacking health coverage. Policymakers want to address these barriers to healthcare in addition to improving mental health in the state.
