As the new Congress takes seat, policy leaders are confronted with economic uncertainty and a dramatically different policy environment in 2023. Despite early predictions that there would be a major party turnover in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, the American public voted outside of expectations, electing a Republican House and a Democratic Senate, both with narrow margins of majority.
The razor-thin margins in each chamber almost guarantee that policymakers on both sides of the aisle will be facing more contentious legislative and political battles in the new Congress.
